Drug and Alcohol Testing Methods in Western Australia:
- Breath testing: Breathalysers offer a quick and non-invasive way to check for alcohol consumption, delivering immediate results on-site.
- Saliva testing: Saliva tests are a simple and effective method for identifying recent drug use. They’re non-intrusive and typically provide results on the same day.
- Urine testing: Urine testing can detect a wide range of drugs and is particularly useful for identifying use over several days — or even weeks. Common substances detected include amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates and THC.
- Hair testing: Hair testing is designed to uncover patterns of long-term or repeated drug use, offering insight into chronic substance exposure.
Results from breath, saliva, and urine testing are typically available within minutes. If a result is non-negative, or if hair testing is used, samples are sent to a certified laboratory for confirmation. In these cases, final results are usually returned within seven to 10 business days.
Our teams follow strict procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance and confidentiality.

Where in Western Australia do you conduct drug and alcohol testing?
AusHealth offers drug and alcohol testing all over Western Australia, covering both major cities and regional areas. Our collectors are located across the state, including smaller and remote communities like Kalgoorlie, Broome, Geraldton and Port Hedland.
How accurate are drug and alcohol tests?
When carried out by experienced professionals using certified equipment and lab confirmation, drug and alcohol tests are very reliable. These tests meet Australian standards and are accepted by courts, law enforcement, and businesses. At AusHealth, we ensure every test is done to the highest quality to provide confidential and reliable results.
Do we need a workplace policy to conduct drug and alcohol tests in Western Australia?
Yes, having a clear workplace drug and alcohol policy is vital before testing begins. This policy helps ensure legal compliance, defines expectations, and protects both the employer and employees. Conducting tests without a policy could lead to legal and ethical complications. AusHealth can assist you in creating or updating your policy to align with Australian workplace standards.
What happens if one of our employees tests positive?
If an employee’s test returns a ‘non-negative’ result, the sample is sent for additional testing in the lab to confirm the findings. Once confirmed, the next steps are dependent on your company’s policies and may include warnings, referral to support services, suspension or termination of employment. All test results are kept confidential; AusHealth can help you manage this process with the highest levels of professionalism.
What’s the difference between saliva, urine and hair tests?
These tests vary mainly in what they detect and the time frame that is required to be covered. Saliva tests are quick and non-invasive, useful for detecting recent drug use within the last 12 to 48 hours, these are often used in roadside or workplace checks. Urine tests are most commonly used for random or pre-employment screening and detect drug use over several days. Hair tests provide a longer history, detecting drug use over 90 days or more, which is helpful for legal cases or long-term monitoring. AusHealth can guide you in choosing the right test for your workplace.
Across Western Australia, we provide additional testing-related services to support compliant and safe businesses.
