Drug and Alcohol Testing Methods in Victoria:
- Breath testing: Breathalysers detect alcohol use through a quick, non-invasive process, delivering immediate results.
- Saliva testing: Saliva tests are non-invasive and effective for detecting recent drug use. Results are typically available the same day.
- Urine testing: Urine tests detect drug use over several days or even weeks. They can identify a wide range of substances and are commonly used for routine or pre-employment screening.
- Hair testing: Hair testing offers a long detection window; it is ideal for identifying chronic or long-term substance use.
Results from breath, saliva, and urine testing are typically available within minutes. Any non-negative results, along with all hair samples, are sent to an accredited laboratory for confirmatory analysis, with final results returned within seven to ten business days.
Our teams follow strict protocols to ensure every test is conducted with accuracy, full regulatory compliance, and complete confidentiality.

Where in Victoria do you conduct drug and alcohol testing?
AusHealth provides drug and alcohol testing services throughout both metropolitan and regional Victoria. Our collectors are based across the state, including in remote and regional areas such as Mildura, Warrnambool, Wodonga, Traralgon, and Horsham—ensuring fast, reliable service wherever your workplace is located.
Do we need a workplace policy to conduct drug and alcohol tests in Victoria?
Yes, a workplace drug and alcohol policy is essential before conducting any testing in Victoria. Such a policy ensures legal compliance, sets clear expectations, and protects both employers and employees. Conducting tests without a policy can lead to legal and ethical issues. AusHealth can assist you in creating or updating your policy to meet Australian standards and local workplace regulations.
Are drug and alcohol tests accurate?
Drug and alcohol tests deliver highly accurate results when performed by qualified professionals using certified equipment and confirmed through accredited laboratories, all in line with Australian regulations. Properly conducted testing meets the stringent standards required by law enforcement, courts, and employers. At AusHealth, we uphold these rigorous standards in every test, providing reliable, compliant, and confidential services that help maintain safer workplaces across Victoria.
What’s the difference between saliva, urine and hair tests?
Different tests vary in what they detect and how quickly results are available. Saliva tests are fast and non-invasive, making them ideal for detecting recent drug use within 12 to 48 hours—perfect for roadside or workplace checks. Urine tests are commonly used for random or pre-employment screening, detecting drug use over the past several days. Hair testing can identify drug use over a much longer period, often 90 days or more, making it suitable for legal cases or ongoing monitoring. AusHealth can help you choose the most appropriate testing method for your workplace needs.
What happens if one of our employees tests positive?
If an employee tests ‘positive’—more accurately described as ‘non-negative’—AusHealth will forward the sample to our accredited laboratory partner for confirmatory testing. Once confirmed, any subsequent actions will be guided by your workplace policy. Possible responses may include a warning, referral to support services, suspension, or termination. All results are handled with strict confidentiality, and AusHealth is available to assist you in managing the process.
