From drug and alcohol collector to national operations leader

Meet Shanne Gomez

Drug and alcohol collector

Since joining AusHealth in 2022, Shanne Gomez has built a career grounded in practical experience, strong leadership and a clear commitment to workplace safety.

Starting as a trainer, Shanne has progressed into her current role as Operations and Training Manager, where she now oversees AusHealth’s national network of drug and alcohol collectors. Her day-to-day work involves supporting collectors in real time, delivering training and ensuring consistent, high-quality service across the country. It is a role that demands both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills, which Shanne has in spades.

With a background in restaurant management, Shanne transitioned into healthcare through pathology before moving into training and assessment. Over time, she expanded her experience across vocational education, delivering qualifications in pathology and allied health, as well as first aid. This breadth of experience now underpins her practical, grounded approach to training.

What drew her to workplace drug and alcohol testing was the ability to stay connected to both health and education while contributing to safer workplaces. The dynamic nature of the role continues to motivate her. No two situations are the same, and each presents its own challenges, whether operational or human.

“The part of my role that I enjoy most is the interaction with our drug and alcohol collectors and knowing that I play a role in ensuring they are educated, confident and supported in the work they complete each day. I value the challenge of working with different personalities and managing varied perceptions of expectations and I find this diversity both engaging and rewarding,” she says.

A key insight Shanne brings to her role is challenging a common misconception. Too often, organisations view drug and alcohol testing as a disciplinary tool. In reality, she sees it as a critical part of supporting employee wellbeing and maintaining a safe working environment.

“It’s important to recognise that drug and alcohol testing is not about catching people out but it’s about maintaining a safe workplace. Everyone has the right to go to work and return home safely at the end of the day.”

She has also observed a broader shift across the industry. Workplace education around drug and alcohol use has evolved significantly, with organisations placing greater emphasis on proactive safety and awareness rather than reactive enforcement. This shift aligns closely with AusHealth’s approach, where training is tailored, practical and relevant to each client’s specific environment.

“Businesses are now providing employees with important information about the effects of drug and alcohol use in the workplace. Not to necessarily discourage personal use but to reinforce the responsibility to not attend work while under the influence,” she states.

Shanne’s leadership is shaped by her firsthand experience as both a trainer and drug and alcohol collector. This perspective allows her to understand the realities of the role and provide meaningful, informed support to her team. It also makes her a strong advocate for the people delivering services on the ground.

“My proudest professional achievement has been progressing from a trainer and collector into my current role, with the organisation recognising my passion, capability and commitment. Having firsthand experience in the role, I have a strong understanding of the challenges and realities collectors face each day. This lived experience enables me to provide informed, practical support and advocate effectively for them as they navigate the demands of their work.”

While the role comes with challenges, particularly balancing competing priorities, Shanne approaches this with structured planning and a clear focus on responsiveness. It is this combination of organisation and adaptability that enables her to manage a fast-paced, national operation.

“My biggest challenge would be not having enough hours in the day, as the role involves balancing multiple responsibilities while remaining responsive and supportive,” she mentions of the challenges.

Shanne is intent on pursuing further education to broaden her knowledge and skills, while remaining open to where future opportunities may lead. “I genuinely enjoy working at AusHealth and value the opportunities and support the organisation has provided me.”

Outside of work, Shanne spends much of her time supporting her teenage daughter’s basketball, often found on the sidelines of a court. It is a balance that reflects her broader approach: committed, present and grounded.
