This course is designed for individuals who are working in collection centres, hospitals or in other health care environment and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing take place OR would like to work within the drug and alcohol testing industry as a collector.

It provides individuals with the skills and knowledge required to perform specimen collection and screening for on-site drug and alcohol testing.

The AusHealth Drug & Alcohol Collector Training course includes the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competence: HLTPAT010 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing.

As leaders in drug and alcohol testing and training, AusHealth’s highly experienced trainers deliver up-to-date courses that help ensure individuals meet current Australian Standards and industry requirements.

This course provides in-depth instruction in the application and practice of:

• AS 3547:2019 Breath alcohol testing devices for personal use
• AS/NZS 4760:2019 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluid and
• AS/NZS 4308:2023 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine.

After completing this course, individuals will:

• Demonstrate knowledge necessary to perform breath, oral fluid and urine collections and describe the procedure for ensuring the integrity of the specimen collection process
• Demonstrate how to obtain a breath, oral fluid and urine specimen, following the chain of custody and record information on the chain of custody form.

All individuals must attend a workshop, complete written theory and demonstrate their skills shown above using simulation in a classroom.

Additionally, individuals MUST complete a collection in an environment that reflects a real workplace.

Where a clinical workplace is used, all activities must be supervised* by a person working in a collection role for 18 hours per fortnight for at least 12 months.

This must be organised by you and undertaken in your own time and submitted to AusHealth using the provided paperwork within three (3) months of coursework completion.

On successful completion of all course requirements, individuals will receive a Statement of Attainment for (HLTPAT010) Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing.

This allows you to conduct drug tests for a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited company.
