AusHealth’s new Clinical Coding Service poised to revolutionise hospital billing

AusHealth’s Clinical Coding team will soon begin trialling revolutionary new AI-enabled software that could optimise the revenue cycle of Australia’s entire health sector.

After establishing a Clinical Coding Service in 2024, AusHealth has been providing clinical coding solutions for state and private hospital clients.

“Clinical coding has always been an obstacle to the efficient cashflow of health providers,” explains Stefan Moro, Manager of AusHealth Hospitals. “Tertiary-educated coders are required to carefully work through patient case notes, many of them hand-written, before hospitals and clinics can accurately report their activity for billing purposes.

“Our coding team – led by Julie Stojanovski – are first class,” he says. “They’re accurate and fast. But they’re about to take the business of clinical coding to somewhere very new and very exciting…”

Medical research charity AusHealth has a strategic partnership team with AI developer HeartAI.

For the past 12 months, the two groups have collaborated on developing a groundbreaking software platform, CODEXA, which uses Artificial Intelligence to reduce coding time and increase accuracy.

“CODEXA is not about replacing coders,” says AusHealth COO Justin Coombs. “It’s about assisting them to work more quickly, more accurately and offer cost efficiencies to clients.

“Backlogs of uncoded episodes can have huge impacts on cashflow. By increasing productivity, CODEXA will be a win for coders and also for health providers who need to keep their revenues flowing.”

The new software will be in the hands of the AusHealth coding team very shortly.

According to Adam Phillips, General Manager of HeartAI, “The first stage of CODEXA has been developed for integration into digitally enabled health services that use Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

“CODEXA uses all the recorded information about a patient, transforms it and makes it available on an interface designed by and for clinical coders.

“It effectively eliminates all the grunt work that coders presently have to do before they can even start coding – which makes for some truly profound efficiencies.”
